Port Alberni Launch Access Agreement Secured!

Thanks to a collaborative effort between the BCHPA, WCSC, ISS, and Mosaic Forest management, “Deer Hunter’s” launch on Mt Irwin is now accessible to all WCSC and ISS members with current HPAC membership, as well visiting pilots. As the valley lies within the Comox Class E TCA, HAGAR certification and an Airband radio are required to fly this site.

The Beaufort valley, located near Port Alberni, BC, offers high-quality XC paragliding for experienced pilots capable of self-guided free-flying adventures. The continuous, south-west facing alpine ridgeline promotes exceptional soaring conditions while the pastoral valley below offers a variety of safe landing options with accessible retrieves.

The WCSC and BCHPA would like to thank Brian B. for his tireless efforts to negotiate and secure this asset for the flying community.

Please refer to our site guide for more information on the WCSC Website.

One of the best flying sites in Canada, the Upper Launch and access road were a joint project of the local Pemberton pilots, the BCHPA, the Pemberton Valley Trails Association, the West Coast Soaring Club and the Hang Gliding and Paragliding Association of Canada (HPAC). This site was the location for the 2012 Canadian National Paragliding Championships.

Mt. St. Benedict Hiking Trail - Complete! 17/5/2020

BCHPA matched funding from the WCSC to offset construction expenses incurred during the Mt. St. Benedict (Benny) hiking trail project, which was initiated by a group of local volunteers. Benny has become an increasingly popular site due to its benign winds and excellent XC for pilots of all experience levels. However, launch access was limited to a rough, indirect and long logging road only suitable for 4x4 vehicles. Although some pilots hiked this road, many more longed for a shorter, more direct trail linking the parking lot to launch. John Weiland, a local pilot, recently organized a group of volunteers and provided local area expertise to make this project a reality. The BCHPA provided financial support by covering expenses including gas and equipment repair. Moving forward, the flying community will benefit through increased accessibility with a corresponding reduction in local environmental impact with less launch traffic.

"It was a pleasure to construct the new Benny’s trail situated in the scenic Miracle valley. This area offers some of the best paragliding in the Lower Mainland area. With a large LZ, beautiful waterfall and park together it was a simple thought. We needed a trail to link it all together. So in February of this year a group of us from the Local club decided to take on the challenge. It now leaves us with a quick way to access our launch in just over an hour. As well it adds a viable option to hikers who use the park area. Many thanks to all those who came out to volunteer"                                                                                                                                                                                                                - John Weiland
The BCHPA encourages site development, maintenance and upgrades by providing financial support to local clubs and pilots. If you have a project in mind, don't hesitate to reach out! Contact your local BCHPA rep today under "About."

Sincerely,
The BCHPA Board.

This was built by Tom Clark and installed by him and a few volunteers. Tom Clark spent over 50 hours of his time, plus materials. The outhouse has since been further improved by the installation of siding, contributed and installed by volunteers.

Mt. Benny got a new outhouse this year, all cedar built by hand and it is gorgeous. Brand new and never used, labour was done by John, Greg & Al. Only the toilet was paid for.

On behalf of all pilots in the Okanagan and abroad, I'd like to thank all those that contributed to the completion of the weather stations here in the Okanagan. Your efforts have been tremendous and show dedication to our club site improvements. As well to those volunteers that cut the grass at LZ's and takeoffs, and to all the lesser known tasks that make our club the best!

This valuable resource could not/ would not of happened without your support and the collection of club fees and the BCHPA weather station grant.
And as a reminder If you have not paid your 2020 club fees please click on link. https://flyok.weebly.com/joinrenew.html
We have nice 2020 helmet stickers for those that have paid.
From the individual members, BCHPA board , other clubs and the many supporters who helped with this project, We would like to thank Trevor MacMurray for your countless hours developing, building, rebuilding and making our flying sites even better. You shouldn't have to pay for a beer for a long time coming.
